Hydro Dam Explanation

WALT write an explanation of how a Hydro-power station works

A hydro-dam is a amazing structure that makes electricity from water!

Firstly you build a dam to block the river.Water then builds up behind the dam. This is called the reservoir.

It then goes through the intake and all the water rushes down  the penstock. Then it goes to the turbine and the water goes around it and makes the turbine spin.

This makes electricity which is stored in the  generator . It goes out to the power lines and it travels to peoples houses.

A dam is a very helpful thing that gives you lots of electricity and it is a very big structure.Hydropower is also renewable.

Solar Energy

WAL about different power sources (where we get power from), and whether they are renewable or non-renewable:

Renewable (will not run out)   energy source: solar, wind, water, biomass, geothermal.

Non-renewable (will run out) energy source:coal, natural gas and oil.

This is how solar  is used to generate (make) power:

Maths blog

In Maths this term we have been learning about FRACTIONS

I can find fractions of whole numbers like:

½ of 12 =6                     ⅓ of 9= 3               1/10 of 20=2

⅔ of 12= 8                       ⅘ of 10= 8

I can recognise when a  fraction is greater than 1:

½ + ½ + ½ =1 1/2

⅓ + ⅓ + ⅓ + ⅓ =1 1/3

7/4 =1 3/4

Best Garden Day

GARDEN DAY ACTIVITY REFLECTION SHEET
This document is a reflection on the purpose, process and outcomes of our Garden Day Activities

ACTIVITY:  Flax Baskets

MATERIALS
(What did we use to carry out the activity?)

  • We used flax.
  • We used a shredder.
  • We used  pegs.

PURPOSE
(Why did we carry out these activities?)

  • to learn how to weave flax baskets
  • To collect the vegetables from the garden

PROCESS
(What we did).

  • We got some flax
  • We got as a group and Missi weaved the flax into a bag with us.
  • We put some pegs on it.
  • Last we used the shredder to cut some of the flax that was sticking out into a thin one.

WHAT WORKED WELL
(What did we do well to make sure our activity was successful?)
  • the patterns.
  • The top of the basket.
  • second time using the shredder to cut the flax.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK WELL
(What do think didn’t work well during your activity?  Why? How did you/could you fix this?)
  • first time using the shredder.
  • starting to make the basket.

WHAT THINGS DID YOU LEARN ?
  • I learnt to weave  flax and I learned to have a great time at making the flax basket.
  • I learnt to share the materials with the people that were helping me.

Kiwi Facts

WAL facts about a kiwi for our report writing.
Interesting facts

  • Kiwis can run faster than a human.
  • Kiwis can grow very big
  • The Kiwi's name doesn't come from its call, but from the Polynesian name for the Bristle- Thighed Curlew, the Kivi. This bird has the same way of feeding as the Kiwi, by poking it's long beak into soft ground.
  • Adult kiwi usually mate for life and they can grow very fast.
  • The kiwi is related to a group of birds called ratites. The closest relatives to kiwi today are emus and cassowaries in Australia, but also the now-extinct moa of New Zealand.

How plants can grow.

This is what I think about how plants grow.
We will be doing some experiments to find out if it is true.

1. How much sunlight do plants need to grow?
Lots of sunlight like 100%

2. Can plants grow in the shade? Can they grow inside?
No they can’t because they will die. NO because that would not work for the plants, because there is no sunlight

3. Can plants grow better by talking to them? Why?
No they wouldn’t because they can’t talk

4. Can plants grow in sand? or rocks? Why?
They can grow in none because the water would just go to the sand but not go in plant. And when it is planted to a rock the water would just slip off the rock and nothing would go on the plant.

5. How much water do plants  need to grow? What type of water?
lots and lots of water.Clean water.

6. Can you feed plants food? If yes, what kind?
Yes you can.You can give it carbon dioxide and water.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

WAL about how plants grow and what they need to grow

My explanation of how Photosynthesis works
The plants need carbon dioxide, water and sunlight these things makes sugar so the plant can grow.

How to make a tapa cloth

Sketching Shells

Firstly, we got some paper and practiced sketching different shells. We drew just the main outlines and of the shells. There were lots of different shells to sketch.

Transfer design

Secondly, we had to transfer our best shell sketch onto cardboard. It was cool doing it.
The colour of my card was brown. We also had to sketch a border with a design.

Scrunching the cardboard

Next, we had to scrunch our card to make it look and feel like a real tapa cloth.
I was having fun. We had to scrunch it about 30 times until it was ready.

Adding colour

Finally, we added some colour to our tapa cloth. I got black and brown pastels to put on my design.I used black vivid for my outlines and the inside.
